Seaside

In 1946 JS Smolian bought 80 acres of land with the intention of building a summer getaway for his employees. While that never happened, he did bring his grandson every summer. His grandson, Robert Davis, grew up to be an award-winning architect and set out to develop the land his grandfather had purchased. In the 80’s Davis teamed up with Andres Duany and Elizabeth Plater-Zyberk to begin planning the town. They traveled all over to discover the perfect blend of features that would become Seaside, a “new old town.” In 1984 Southern Living featured the town of Seaside and people began to take interest. It has grown and developed ever since into their vision of a classic neighborhood quickly becoming the heart of the South Walton region.

“Seaside is that warm breeze that gently stirs the chimes on the front porch,” – Co-founder of Seaside, Florida, Daryl Rose Davis.

Seaside, Florida, the world's first New Urbanist town, is a picturesque coastal town located along the Gulf of Mexico in the Florida Panhandle. Known for its charming architecture and vibrant community, Seaside is a prime example of New Urbanism, a design movement that emphasizes walkability, mixed-use development, and community-oriented spaces.

The town has it's own school, post-office, professional theater company, grocery, bookstore, church, toy store, clothing and sporting goods stores. A twice weekly Farmer's Market surrounds the amphitheater in the town center every Tuesday and Saturday from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm. The town features pastel-colored homes with white picket fences, wide porches, and a variety of architectural styles, including Victorian, Neoclassical, and Modern. The layout of Seaside encourages pedestrian traffic, with narrow streets, open green spaces, and a central town square that serves as a hub for community events and gatherings.

Seaside's beautiful beaches are a major attraction, offering sugar-white sand and clear turquoise waters. The town's beachfront is lined with pavilions and walkways, providing easy access to the shoreline. In addition to its natural beauty, Seaside boasts a thriving arts and cultural scene, with galleries, theaters, and music festivals that draw visitors from around the region.

Seaside's unique blend of architectural charm, community spirit, and coastal beauty make it a sought-after destination for both residents and tourists looking for a quintessential beach town experience.
